Arsenal drop Gabriel Magalhaes for second game running as Aaron Ramsdale starts ahead of David Raya

Gabriel Magalhaes started from the bench yet again for Arsenal in their 1-0 win away at Crystal Palace.

The Brazilian defender missed out on starting for the second match running as the Gunners claimed all three points in south London.

Gabriel was a surprise substitute for the Premier League opener against Nottingham Forest, which Arsenal won 2-1.

Many fans expected him to come back into the side following Jurrien Timber’s knee injury.

But instead of Gabriel, it was Takehiro Tomiyasu who came into the side and started at left-back.

That saw Ben White keep his spot at centre-back, with natural defensive midfielder Thomas Partey filling it at right-back yet again.

Elsewhere, Aaron Ramsdale retained his spot between the sticks, with new signing David Raya made to settle for a spot on the bench after arriving from Brentford.

Meanwhile Scotland international Kieran Tierney, who faces an uncertain future in north London, was been omitted from the matchday squad.

Arsenal supporters were quick to question Arteta’s decision to leave out Gabriel, as one fan tweeted: “No Gabriel again? We better win or Arteta will deservedly get loads of criticism.”

Another posted: “Why is Gabriel on the bench?”

A third added: “If you think Gabriel being benched for Tomiyasu isn’t weird then…”

Meanwhile this fan stated: “What the f***- is going on with Gabriel. How’s Tomiyasu starting over him?”

Arteta eventually had to turn to Gabriel after Tomiyasu was sent off for a harsh second yellow card.

And Gabriel showed his class as he helped Arsenal hold on for the win in what was a gritty performance from the Gunners
