Tottenham target Ivan Toney admits admiration for Arsenal and their ‘passionate’ fans

Ivan Toney has admitted his appreciation for Arsenal as speculation over his future at Brentford grows.

The striker is currently serving an eight-month ban from football after breaching the Football Association’s betting rules.

Toney was charged with 262 breaches of the rules spanning from February 2017 to January 2021 and handed a £50,000 fine.

Even though he won’t make a return to the game until January, a move away from Brentford could be on the cards.

The Athletic report that Tottenham have ‘internally discussed’ a move for Toney in January with Harry Kane now at Bayern Munich.

It would certainly be a huge acquisition for Spurs, but it seems as though he prefers their north London rivals Arsenal.

Speaking on his future on Diary of a CEO, he said: “I don’t let this all affect me. It’s obviously going on in the background, when you get the chance in games I’ve got to score and keep doing well.

“Everybody wants to play at the top of the tree, not that Brentford aren’t there, but I feel like going to a big club and fighting for trophies is something everyone wants to do.

“If the chance came along, then I’d have to look more into it. The manager knows I want to play at the highest level possible, whenever that time comes then so be it. My time at Brentford has been good, probably one of the best times of my whole career.”

“The next club I go to, if I was to move, would be the right club,” he added. “I’ve been a Liverpool fan my whole life, but from young I’ve liked Arsenal.

“I’ve liked watching Arsenal and how they play and how passionate their fans are. I’m a Liverpool boy at heart.”

Despite his allegiances to Liverpool, one Manchester United striker in particular caught his eye when he was younger: “I liked [Dimitar] Berbatov when he was there. I liked watching Man United a lot when he was there.”

Toney has scored 68 goals across all competitions for Brentford since he signed in 2020, with 32 of those coming in the Premier League.

The Bees have so far picked up four points from six without him so far this season but he could very well be absent for good should he sign for another club after his ban.
