Oleksandr Usyk was not particularly concerned when Tony Bellew warned him he had knockout power.
The pair clashed in 2018 in what would be Usyk’s final fight in the cruiserweight division where he defended his undisputed world titles before moving to heavyweight.
Prior to the fight, Usyk was a heavy favourite, having never been beaten as a professional, but Bellew believed he had a significant power advantage that would lead him to victory.
“Let’s not forget, I have the one thing that he doesn’t have,” Bellew said at the pre-fight press conference.
“And that’s a punch that can switch lights off within the blink of an eye.”
Usyk was asked to respond and he simply said: “He’s kidding,” as the whole room chuckled.
“We’ll soon see my friend,” Bellew replied.
And the irony is that Usyk went on to KO Bellew with one stunning punch in the eighth round of their clash that sent the Liverpudlian crashing to the canvas.
The Ukrainian will be hoping for a similar ending when he defends his unified WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight world titles against Daniel Dubois on Saturday night, which will be free to listen to exclusively on talkSPORT.
But, on this occasion, even Usyk wouldn’t argue if Dubois claimed to have the power advantage, as the 25-year-old Brit has knocked out 18 of his 20 opponents as a professional.
And Dubois is confident his power and youth will help him overcome the 36-year-old Usyk, telling Queensbury Promotions: “It’s time for me to show that I’m a young man and you can’t let this old man out-work you.
“I’m 25 for Christ’s sake. Are you really gonna let this old man take this away from you? Come on.”
Oleksandr Usyk vs Daniel Dubois is live on talkSPORT on Saturday 26 August
