Chelsea vs Luton Town predictions

It has been a miserable few months for Chelsea fans, on the field at least.

A 1-1 draw with Liverpool and a 3-1 defeat by West Ham United means the Blues have only won one Premier League match since the middle of March.

That is a poor record for any team, never mind one that is accustomed to competing for the title.

The early signs are that Chelsea will struggle to contend at the very top of the division this term. A season of transition beckons for Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

It is not all doom and gloom. Chelsea were the better team in that draw with Liverpool, and they had their moments against West Ham too.

Had Enzo Fernandez scored from the penalty spot, the Blues would have gone 2-1 up and the outcome might have been very different.

Equally, though, the first two games of the campaign have demonstrated that Chelsea still have a lot of work to do.

There have been plenty of eye-catching signings in the Todd Boehly era, but the American’s high-risk transfer strategy is yet to convince.

Chelsea’s next three games are against Luton, Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth. Nothing can be taken for granted in the Premier League, but those are not the toughest fixtures.

This is a chance for Pochettino’s side to build momentum and finally give the Chelsea fans something to cheer.

📝 Chelsea vs Luton Town betting tips

Chelsea should get up and running for the 2023/24 season with a victory over Luton Town in the first game of the Premier League weekend.

Chelsea to win to nil – 10/11 (bet365)

Chelsea have gone eight top-flight home games without a win. The last time they tasted victory on familiar turf was way back on March 4, when Leeds United were beaten by a goal to nil.

Just twice in 2023 have Chelsea triumphed in front of their own fans in the Premier League. For context that is the same number of home wins as Leeds and fewer than Leicester City, both of whom were relegated last term.

There was a time when Chelsea were virtually unbeatable on their own patch. No longer.

Pochettino will be desperate to make Stamford Bridge a fortress again. The Blues started slowly in that 1-1 draw with Liverpool, but by the end of the match they could count themselves a little unfortunate to have only collected a single point.

Luton are the favourites to be demoted this season. If they are to upset the odds, it will probably be because of their home form. Kenilworth Road is the type of ground that Premier League opponents will not relish visiting.

The Hatters only scored 26 goals in 23 away games in 2022/23 – and that was in the Championship. A clean sheet should be well within reach for Chelsea in this one.

Tip Chelsea to win to nil at 10/11 with bet365

Under 2.5 goals – 6/4 (bet365)

Chelsea’s biggest shortcoming last season was their attacking output. Only Bournemouth, Southampton, Everton and Wolverhampton Wanderers put the ball in the back of the net less often than the west Londoners.

We are yet to see if that issue has been resolved. Granted, Chelsea have scored in both of their matches so far this season, albeit just one goal in each game.

But there is still work to do in forward areas, particularly now that Pochettino has lost Carney Chukwuemeka and Christopher Nkunku to injury. Reece James’ absence is also a blow from an attacking perspective.

Chelsea still lack a touch of creativity in the final third and they have not yet mastered the patterns of play that Pochettino will be encouraging on the training field.

As a result, do not be surprised if they have to work hard to break down Luton here.

Rob Edwards has had a fortnight to prepare for this game after last weekend’s meeting with Burnley was postponed due to ongoing work at Kenilworth Road.

Luton are a physically robust team and they will be well drilled at Stamford Bridge, so Chelsea fans should not expect a blowout even though they are strong favourites to emerge triumphant.

Ben Chilwell to score any time – 11/2 (bet365)

With Reece James out for another month or so, Ben Chilwell has become even more integral to this Chelsea team.

Although Pochettino’s system has been widely labelled a 3-4-3, the man himself insists he has been employing a back four with Chilwell fielded on the left-hand side of midfield.

Either way, the England international has plenty of licence to get forward. If anything he is able to attack even more regularly now that James is out, with Malo Gusto playing a more reserved role at right-back.

No Chelsea player had more shots against West Ham than Chilwell. In fact, Said Benrahma was the only player on the pitch to aim more efforts at goal.

Meanwhile, in the draw with Liverpool the former Leicester man had a goal disallowed and pushed forward at every opportunity.

Chilwell is clearly not the likeliest scorer in this match, but at the odds available this is a very attractive pick.

Back Ben Chilwell to score any time at 11/2 with bet365
