Moises Caicedo and Eden Hazard proved crucial in Chelsea’s bid to sign Romeo Lavia ahead of Liverpool.
In one of the most bonkers transfer sagas in recent history, Chelsea and Liverpool went head to head for, not one, but two midfielders.
The stakes were higher than any other club in the Premier League had gone before after British transfer record bids were submitted for Caicedo at Brighton.
Chelsea ended up signing the Ecuador international after agreeing a deal worth up to £115million after he turned down Liverpool.
But there would be a further twist when Lavia chose to sign for the Blues over a move to Anfield.
Caicedo helped sway the decision when he messaged the 19-year-old to join him at Stamford Bridge, according to The Athletic.
As well as the former Brighton star, Chelsea legend Hazard also intervened and spoke to Lavia at length about his old club.
As the most famous Belgian to play for the Blues, Hazard’s word spoke volumes to his compatriot.
Hearing what it was like to play for the club and live in London had a major impact on Lavia, who grew up watching the Belgian play for his country and Chelsea.
Eventually, Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino would go on to win the race for Lavia ahead of Liverpool, as well, who had made several bids for the teenager over the summer.
In their announcement video, a FaceTime conversation between Lavia and Hazard was sent out on social media.
However, this conversation was for show as the real talks between the two happened earlier.
Lavia signed for Chelsea in a deal worth up to £58m, £8m more than the original asking price set by Southampton at the start of the summer.
There has been a complete overhaul of the midfield at Stamford Bridge this year after Jorginho kickstarted the departures in January.
N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have all left permanently while Caicedo, Lavia and Lesley Ugochukwu have joined, as well as Enzo Fernandez in January.
Liverpool, meanwhile, have also lost several key players in Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and James Milner, as well as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and Fabio Carvalho.
Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai have signed as attacking options while Japan captain Wataru Endo has joined from Stuttgart.
