Mikaela Mayer has told talkSPORT.com that she wants to challenge Natasha Jonas for her IBF welterweight (147lbs) world title in the near future.
The American former super-featherweight (130lbs) world champion bounced back from her defeat to Alycia Baumgardner last year with a victory over Lucy Wildheart in April.
For that fight, Mayer boxed at lightweight (135lbs), but has now realised she needs to move further up in weight.
On Saturday night, she is set to return against Silvia Bortot on the undercard of the Liam Smith vs Chris Eubank Jr rematch in Manchester.
This bout will take place at a 142lbs catchweight, though the 33-year-old has made it clear that her future lies at welterweight (147lbs).
“I went up to 135lbs in my last fight and it was still a big weight cut for me,” Mayer told talkSPORT.com.
“My body just filled out so much it was screaming at me to like let myself go up.
“I was like, ‘I don’t think I’m a 135lber either, I think I need to move up to 140lbs.’
“So we’re having this fight at 142lbs, but I think my best weight is gonna be 147lbs.
“I’m at the point in my career where I want to see what I what I can accomplish when I’m letting my body do what it wants.
“I’m 33 years old, but I’ve never let my body fill out and put on that muscle the way that it wants to.
“I’ve been fighting at 132lbs in the amateurs and 130lbs in the pros, so while I’m still in my prime I wanna see what I can accomplish letting my body do it’s thing, so I’m excited for it. I’m feeling good, I’m feeling strong.”
Mayer continued: “I’m not gonna be able to go down to 130lbs or 135lbs ever again. It’s just not possible for me.
“I feel so good. I don’t want to put my body through that and I don’t think you’d be getting the best version of me. It’s time to see what that looks like.
“I plan on going to 147lbs and I plan on challenging the champion at 147lbs very soon.
“I’m targeting Natasha Jonas at 147lbs – it seems like the most feasible fight for me, we’re already working closely with BOXXER.
“She just won the IBF world title. Sandy Ryan and Jessica McCaskill are fighting each other, so it just makes sense to try to negotiate a possible fight with Natasha Jonas.”
Another British fighter in the BOXXER/Sky Sports stable is Caroline Dubois.
The 22-year-old, 7-0 (5 KOs) contender has been calling for a clash with Mayer, but the American is not interested.
“She’s got lofty ambitions which is great for her, but maybe she needs to go back to maths class,” Mayer replied.
“She’s fighting at 135lbs, I’ve repeatedly told the world that I’m going to 147lbs, so I don’t understand the rivalry that her and BOXXER are making up.
“They’re just making up this rivalry that doesn’t exist.
“I’m not the type of fighter who’s gonna buy into a rivalry and start talking s*** to somebody who’s two weight classes below me.”
