Tony Bellew defends Prince Naseem Hamed’s son Aadam Hamed despite fans branding debut ’embarrassing’

Tony Bellew has put Aadam Hamed’s debut into perspective after boxing fans labelled it ’embarrassing’.

Hamed, who is the son of British boxing legend ‘Prince’ Naseem Hamed, had his first professional boxing fight on Saturday night on the undercard of Oleksandr Usyk vs Daniel Dubois.

The 23-year-old came up against Vojtech Hrdy and it was clear from the weigh-in that this might be a mismatch, as Hamed looked in far better shape than his opponent.

And this showed on fight night, as early in round one, Hamed backed his opponent onto the ropes and Hrdy covered up without throwing any punches back, which led to his corner throwing the towel in.

And boxing fans were not impressed, as one Twitter user said: “Was that even a fight?”

Another added: “It was more embarrassing than I expected.”

While a third commented: “Utter disgrace that kid was put in there with him.”

Former cruiserweight world champion Tony Bellew, however, took to Twitter to defend Hamed.

“Every prospect or every name coming through gets one like this on their debuts,” Bellew said.

“Unless you’re an Olympic gold medallist or a vastly travelled multi gold winning amateur.”

Hamed himself also responded to the criticism, saying: “I think [the media] is always going to say what they want. I just need to do my best to take no notice and do me.

“I believe in myself and I believe in my ability. This is just a stepping stone to where I want to get to.

“I am not here to take part, I am here to take over. Remember that.”
