Champions League group stage draw LIVE: Date, UK start time, pots and how to follow as Europe’s top clubs find out opponents


The Champions League group stage draw takes place this week as Europe’s best clubs find out who they will face in the 2023/24 campaign.

Reigning champions Manchester City are out for another European title this season and they are a team that all will be fearing.

Pep Guardiola’s side are in Pot 1 and are the only Premier League team to be in there with Manchester United and Arsenal included in a star-studded Pot 2. 

14-time winners Real Madrid were beaten to the La Liga title by Barcelona last season meaning Barca claimed the top tier place.

Newcastle are ready for their first draw in over 20 years and they will be pulled from Pot 4 meaning they are set to receive a tough group back in Europe.

The draw will take place on Thursday, August 31 at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco. 

It is scheduled to begin at around 6pm local time which is 5pm in the UK.

It will be broadcast live on UEFA.com while TNT Sports will also have coverage of the event.

Champions League draw: How does it work? 

The 32 teams involved in the draw are split into four pots. 

Pot 1 is filled with the reigning Champions League winners, Europa League winners and domestic league winners. 

Pots 2 to 4 are determined by the clubs’ coefficient ranking. More details on coefficient rankings can be found here. 

A team from each Pot will be drawn into a group but no team can be drawn against a club from their own country. 

Any other restrictions are expected to be announced ahead of the draw.
