Ange Postecoglou lambasted over Tottenham changes as talkSPORT co-host tells him: ‘Know your history’

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has been slammed for making nine changes in Tuesday’s Carabao Cup defeat to Fulham.

Spurs were dumped out of the cup on penalties at the first hurdle in what represents the club’s most realistic chance of silverware this season.

Richarlison’s second-half strike cancelled out Micky van de Ven’s unfortunate own-goal which put the Cottagers ahead.

Fulham were able to keep their cool to dispatch all five penalty kicks and advance to round three but fingers have been pointed at Postecoglou’s line-up after a host of big names were rested.

The decision did not go down well with Gabby Agbonlahor, who said a short history lesson would have been enough to help the Spurs boss make the correct call.

“Tottenham didn’t start very well but he should know the history of the last few seasons with Spurs and when they’ve rested players, they’ve been knocked out,” the former Aston Villa striker told talkSPORT.

“Last season, they rested Harry Kane and got knocked out of the [FA] Cup. You’re in such a good moment at Spurs, you’ve got no European football. Just play your best team, take players off.”

Postecoglou made wholesale changes from the side that claimed a 2-0 victory at Bournemouth on Saturday and with confidence riding high, some have suggested the Spurs boss should have fielded a stronger eleven.

But Agbonlahor claims that despite Postecoglou’s ‘mistake’ in team selection, he would have learned plenty about the quality of his wider squad.

“Why not play [James] Maddison and [Heung-min] Son and rest [Dejan] Kulusevski and [Yves] Bissouma? Mix it up a bit. Nine changes?

“It’s the same players that cost Spurs. [Davinson] Sanchez, not good enough. [Giovani] Lo Celso, is okay. He did okay last night. Ben Davies, he’s been a good servant but not good enough any more.

“Oliver Skipp, I don’t think he’s at that standard for Spurs. So maybe this is a chance for Ange to look at his squad and think, my starting eleven – very good. But the rest of my bench – not good enough.

“When he looks back at the team he selected, he’ll feel like he made a mistake and he’ll understand sooner or later that Spurs fans demand winning a trophy soon and you’re already out of one you wanted to win.”
