American tennis star Coco Gauff was left in awe of Justin Bieber as he watched on from the stands in her US Open win.
The 19-year-old beat Elise Mertens 3-6 6-3 6-0 on Friday night to advance to the Round of 16.
It was fine comeback to ensure she progressed to such a stage in the competition for the second consecutive year.
Spotted in attendance at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in New York was world famous singer Justin Bieber and his wife Hailey.
NBA star Jimmy Butler was also seen sitting behind them, with Gauff clearly an admirer of all three.
Speaking after her win against Mertens, she said: “I was definitely starstruck with Justin Bieber.
“I mean, ‘Never Say Never’ was one of my favourite songs when I was a kid, and then ‘Baby’, I could go through all of his songs! Hailey too, I guess it was a little date night for them which is really cool.
“Then obviously Jimmy Butler, he’s come to a couple of my matches so I wasn’t as surprised that he was there but I’m still like, ‘Man, this guy is busy why is he coming to watch me play?’ But it’s a really cool experience.”
Gauff also had another international musical icon on her mind during her win, this time Beyonce and her current world tour.
“Tonight I feel like I was thinking about everything, when I’m playing tennis I think about a lot of things outside of tennis,” she added.
“I was thinking about the ‘Renaissance Tour’ during my match, I think a lot of different things and honestly, it keeps me relaxed.
“I don’t know if it’s a coping mechanism or what but yeah, I thought about Marvel today, obviously the Biebers, there’s a lot of things I was thinking about. Today was just a fun night.”
Gauff will face Caroline Wozniacki in the Round of 16 on Sunday night as she eyes the US Open quarter-finals yet again.
Should she go all the way this year, she will become the first home singles champion since 2017 when Sloane Stephens claimed victory.
