‘So poor’ – Liam Smith’s career is over after Chris Eubank Jr knockout and boxing fans were conned says Carl Froch

Carl Froch was not impressed with Liam Smith following his stoppage defeat against Chris Eubank Jr.

The pair clashed on Saturday night and Eubank got revenge, having been knocked out by Smith in the fourth round of their first fight in January.

But this time he was dominant – dropping the Liverpudlian twice on his way to victory.

Smith revealed after the fight that the 160lbs middleweight limit had been an issue for him, as he had to shed 42lbs in the build-up.

Discussing the fight on talkSPORT’s ‘The Verdict’, George Groves described Eubank Jr’s performance as ‘exquisite’ before asking Froch whether he was shocked.

“I was shocked that Chris Eubank Jr performed so well, but also that Liam Smith performed so poorly,” Froch said.

“I don’t want to be in danger of taking anything away from Chris Eubank Jr’s performance, it was a good performance.

“He boxed well, he got his range pretty quickly and he was looking for that uppercut, which he landed in round four and dropped Liam Smith.

“Early on in the fight it was a bit awkward with the holding and it was messy… but I was shocked that Liam Smith was so poor.

“It transpired in the post-fight press conference that he took 42lbs off, three stone.

“I don’t know how you can take three stone off when you’re an 11 stone fighter.

“I was very impressed with Eubank’s performance because I thought he was finished, I thought he was shot after that first fight when he got clipped on the chin by a career super-welterweight, I thought he wouldn’t be able to recover from that, but he did.”

Froch continued: “I just think Liam Smith was that badly weight drained and he’d done the weight that poorly and he was so tired and drained.

“I just think he was hanging in there and surviving from the outset and even more-so from the knockdown in round four… I was really disappointed with Liam Smith’s performance.

“Taking three stone off, 42lbs, being that drained – not only is it dangerous, it’s also kinda conning the fans, cheating the fans.

“You’re there to put a performance on when actually you’ve got no chance because you’re physically incapable and that’s what it looked like from round one for me.

“He can’t do 160lbs, he’s 35. For me, his career is over.”
