Slovakia v Portugal preview

Portugal have won all four of their qualifying matches so far for Euro 2024 without having conceded a goal and are averaging 3.5 goals per game.

Roberto Martinez took over at the start of the year and has been flawless in his time in charge of the Euro 2016 champions, kicking off his tenure with 4-0 and 6-0 wins over Liechtenstein and Luxembourg respectively.

Martinez, the first person not from Portugal or Brazil to manage the Selecao das Quinas, then continued his 100% record as manager with wins over Bosnia and Iceland to ensure they head into the latest international break top of Group J.

The Iberian side have a two point lead over their opponents and Friday, and a five point lead over third placed Luxembourg, with the top two teams in the group qualifying automatically for next summer’s championships.

Slovakia head into their crunch match with Portugal unbeaten in their last seven matches, of which they’ve won their last three and have positioned themselves in a good position to finish in the top two of their group come the end of the qualifying campaign in November.

Francesco Calzona’s side do still need to play Portugal twice, with all the other teams in the group having already played them once.

The Falcons started their qualifying campaign for next summer’s Euros with a goalless draw at home to Luxembourg but have since won three on the trot against Bosnia, Iceland and Liechtenstein.

With 10 points out of 12 so far, Calzona’s men sit second in their group, three points ahead of Luxembourg, though Bosnia and Iceland are expected to mount late challenges for that second and final qualifying spot.

Friday will be the fifth time the two nations have met before, with Portugal winning three of their previous matches and the other ending in a draw.

The last meeting between the two sides came in qualification for the 2006 World Cup, in which Portugal won 2-0 at home though drew 1-1 in Bratislava in the earlier encounter.

Slovakia v Portugal betting tips

Portugal are expected to continue their fantastic start to their qualifying campaign on Friday, in which they average 3.5 goals per game and are yet to concede.

BetVictor are offering odds of 17/2 or 14/1 for Martinez’s side to win 3-0 or 4-0 respectively, which could be worth a punt if they are to follow their recent trend.

Slovakia are also in good form though, and will confident in their ability to cause an upset at home on Friday night, with a 1-0 or 2-1 win priced at 14/1 and 18/1 respectively.
