Frank Warren officially submits appeal for result of Oleksandr Usyk vs Daniel Dubois fight following controversy

Frank Warren said he would appeal the result of the Oleksandr Usyk vs Daniel Dubois fight and now he has done it.

The pair clashed late last month and Usyk defended his unified WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight world titles, as he won by ninth round stoppage, but there was some controversy earlier in the fight.

In round five, Dubois attempted a body shot that dropped Usyk, but it was ruled a low blow by the referee and the Ukrainian was allowed almost four minutes to recover.

After the fight, Dubois claimed he was ‘cheated’ out of becoming world champion.

Meanwhile, his promoter Warren said that he would be appealing the decision, as he told talkSPORT: “I’d like them to declare it a no contest because Daniel should have those three belts around his waist, but if we can get it to a rematch then that’s where we’ll get to.”

And now, as reported by Dan Rafael, Warren has officially submitted an appeal to the WBA, the organisation through which Dubois became mandatory challenger.

In the appeal, as Warren had previously promised, he calls for the fight to be declared a ‘no contest’ and requests a rematch.

Warren claims that “Daniel Dubois was unjustly denied of his rightful status as unified world heavyweight champion.”

The appeal also makes the claim that Usyk would not have got up from Dubois’ body shot had it not been ruled a low blow.

It says: “Mr Dubois landed a body blow that dropped and severely hurt Mr Usyk and, seemingly, crowned Mr Dubois the heavyweight champion.”

Before adding: “The blow was incorrectly adjudicated as low by Mr Pabon [the referee].”

In terms of next steps, the WBA don’t actually have the power to declare the fight a ‘no contest’ but they can order Usyk to fight Dubois in a rematch, which would mean the Ukrainian would either have to vacate his WBA title and move on or fight the Brit again.
