Israel Adesanya shushes booing crowd after facing off with Sean Strickland for final time before UFC 293

Israel Adesanya has become an unlikely villain ahead of his fight with Sean Strickland at UFC 293 in Australia on Saturday night.

Despite being so close to home, the Nigerian-born New Zealander was booed by fans after facing off with Strickland for the final time before their middleweight title bout.

On Friday, both men successfully made the 185lbs championship limit before taking to the scales at a ceremonial weigh-in attended by Aussie MMA fans.

After posing for pictures, Adesanya went nose-to-nose with Strickland as they were squared off by UFC president Dana White who seemed worried about a fight breaking out.

As ‘Stylebender’ stared through his opponent, Strickland was more interested in cracking jokes and playing up to the crowd that had surprisingly started to cheer for him throughout fight week.

The 32-year-old addressed being a fan faovurite for the first time in his career.

“I’m getting support not because you like me, but because Izzy sucks,” Strickland said during an interview with Jon Anik after facing off with Adesanya.

“When I represent your country more than Izzy does it’s easy to support me.

“I’m going to go have a f****** war for you guys and I’m going to lose some f****** brain cells for you f****** guys. Thank you for f****** showing me all the love. Thank you!”

Strickland was cheered off the stage before the mood changed when Anik made his way over to Adesanya to get his final comments ahead of UFC 293.

“I don’t think about him, it’s not about me, it’s about we,” he insisted.

“I’ve got a great team around me, great countries behind me, great cultures behind me but enough of all that.

“Tomorrow… [raises finger to lips to shush the crowd when they began to boo him].”

Adesanya will be confident of silencing his haters after establishing himself as arguably the greatest middleweight in UFC history over the past few years.

Strickland is a heavy underdog in his first title fight which only came about because number one contender Dricus du Plessis couldn’t compete at UFC 293.
