Eagle-eyed supporters hilariously spotted the moment that an NFL referee ‘popped up like the Undertaker’ after being wiped out on Sunday night.
The incident occurred during the Washington Commanders’ clash with the Arizona Cardinals, a fixture the Commanders won 20-16 on the opening weekend of the season.
While it was a great start to the new campaign for Ron Rivera’s side, it was a poor match official who got fans talking on social media.
The collision happened with Commanders quarterback Sam Howell tried to get out of trouble by running towards the left sideline, only to be wiped out by the Kyzir White of the Cardinals defence.
In doing so, the big-hitting tackle knocked the unassuming referee, Derick Bowers, off his feet and left him lying flat on his back.
With the match being broadcast all over the world, Bowers was clearly keen to ensure that he shook off the hefty blow as he immediately sat bolt-upright as if nothing had happened.
The tackle happened out of bounds and one fan on social media spotted the referee’s commitment to flagging the offence, writing: “Ref got bodied but still popped up like The Undertaker to throw the flag.”
Of course, WWE legend The Undertaker is renowned for his trademark of sitting upright after being laid out on his back, replicating the haunting image of a body coming back from the dead.
But while Bowers has certainly gone viral for his show of strength after the match, there’s little doubt that he might be feeling the effects of that challenge after waking up on Monday morning.
