Italy v Ukraine preview

Second meets third in Group C on Tuesday night in a massive six pointer that could have a huge say in which team will book their place at next summer’s Euros in Germany.

Italy head into the match three points behind their opposition but have played a game fewer.

Luciano Spalletti’s side played their first two matches of the campaign under the tutelage of Roberto Mancini, losing their first game 2-1 at home to England before winning 2-0 in Malta in their second.

Mancini then resigned from his role as Italy head coach following their third place finish in the Nations League back in June, with last season’s Scudetto winning Napoli manager Spalletti being announced to take over.

The 64-year-old’s first game in charge didn’t quite go to plan, as the reigning European champions were held to a 1-1 draw by North Macedonia on Saturday night as the Azzurri dropped more qualifying points.

Italy have the advantage of having a safety net with regards to their qualification in that they will compete in the play-offs if they don’t finish in the top two, due to having won their Nations League group.

Ukraine kept hold of their three point lead over Italy on Saturday after their draw against group toppers England in Poland.

The eastern European side have now picked up seven points from their four qualification matches so far, recovering well from their 2-0 defeat to England at Wembley in their opening game.

Since that defeat, former West Ham and Tottenham striker Sergiy Rebrov has taken over managerial duties with the team, and is unbeaten in his four matches in charge, with draws with both Germany and England.

The last time these two sides met was in a friendly back in 2018 which ended in a 1-1 draw, which means that Ukraine are still yet to beat Italy ahead of Tuesday’s encounter, losing in six of the eight matches they’ve played.

Italy v Ukraine betting tips

Mateo Retegui is Italy’s leading goalscorer in Euro 2024 qualifying so far, and Paddy Power are offering odds for 5/6 on the Genoa striker to find the net again on Tuesday.

Likewise, Viktor Tsygankov is Ukraine’s top scorer in the group and can be backed at 4/1 to add to his two goals he’s scored already.

Both teams drew 1-1 in their qualifying matches on Saturday night, and Paddy Power are pricing a draw by the same score between the sides at 7/1.
