Tottenham vs Sheffield United LIVE: Spurs close in on best start to top-flight campaign since 1965 – kick-off time, team news and how to follow

Tottenham can make their best start to a league season in 57 years by beating Sheffield United on Saturday afternoon.

Spurs are flying under new manager Ange Postecoglou, sitting second in the Premier League table after going unbeaten in their opening four games.

Postecoglou’s side have earned 10 points in those fixtures and one more win would see them post a better starting record than in any campaign since 1965.

This turnaround in fortune for Tottenham has their fans jubilant and this will make a trip to north London even harder for Sheff United.

The newly-promoted side have not won a game so far this season, claiming their first point last time out, and they face a very tough task in the capital.

Tottenham vs Sheffield United: Team news

Tottenham will be hoping James Maddison returns from England duty without any issues after instantly becoming a key player for the club.

Giovani Lo Celso hasn’t started a game for Spurs this season and could be a doubt for this one after picking up a quad strain.

They will also remain without Rodrigo Bentancur, Ryan Sessegnon and Bryan Gil who are all recovering from long-term injuries.

As for United, new signing Cameron Archer scored on his debut last time out and is expected to lead the line.

However, the Blades are expecting some key absentees for the game with George Baldock picking up a knock during the international break.

Anel Ahmedhodzic and William Osula are also a doubt for the game due to issues while playing for their country.

Tottenham vs Sheffield United: What has been said?

Postecoglou has told talkSPORT his main focus at Tottenham is to get the team playing exciting football.

On his first few months in charge at Spurs, Big Ange told White and Jordan: “There have been no real surprises, it’s football.

“The challenges are expected every time I walk into a role – there’s a reason why I’m here, if things are going well I wouldn’t be here.

“My eyes are wide open and I expected it to be tough, but we’ve had an encouraging start.”

He continued: “When you go into a challenge like that you want to leave a mark and make an impact.

“The challenge for me is the same everywhere, to get the team to play a certain kind of football that gives fans something excited about on a weekly basis and bring success to the club. That’s the reason behind what I do.

“Success for me is winning things, but it’s not a desperation, because that’s not sustainable. For me, the foundation of it is just to play the game a certain way which I hope will win things but also excites the punters.

“I’m not in this job desperate to win something just to win something, I want this club to win something on a yearly basis, and there’s a difference.

“I want to win every game, trust me, but I don’t want to win something for the sake of winning something.

Tottenham vs Sheffield United: Match facts

  • After scoring against Everton last time out, Cameron Archer could become the second player to score in both of his first two Premier League appearances for Sheffield United, after Brian Deane in August 1992. Should Archer both start and score in this match, he would be the youngest English player (21 years, 281 days) to score in both of his first two Premier League starts since Eric Dier in August 2014 (20y 221d).
  • Tottenham’s Son Heung-min has been directly involved in 31 goals in his last 31 Premier League appearances against newly promoted sides (21 goals, 10 assists), scoring a hat-trick at Burnley last time out. Only seven different players have ever scored a hat-trick in successive Premier League appearances, most recently Erling Haaland in August 2022.
  • Since the start of 2021-22, the only English players with more combined goals and assists in the Premier League than James Maddison’s 43 (24 goals, 19 assists) are Harry Kane (59) and Bukayo Saka (46). Maddison has scored in both of Tottenham’s last two Premier League games, last scoring in three in a row in the competition in May 2022 for Leicester (run of 4).
  • After a run of 27 Premier League games without a draw from December 2020 to August 2023 (W7 L20), Sheffield United drew 2-2 with Everton last time out. The Blades haven’t drawn successive games in the competition since a run of three from November to December 2019, which included a 1-1 draw with Spurs.
  • Tottenham have scored 2+ goals in all four of their league games under Ange Postecoglou. Only four managers have seen their side score at least twice in each of their first five ever games in the Premier League: Carlo Ancelotti (2009), Pep Guardiola (2016), Craig Shakespeare (2017), and Maurizio Sarri (2018).
  • Sheffield United are winless in their opening four games of a league season for a third time in the last four campaigns (also 2020-21 and 2021-22), something they had only done in three of their previous 20 league seasons beforehand. The Blades also failed to win their fifth league game in both 2020-21 and 2021-22.
  • Only in 2009-10 (12) have Tottenham earned more points from their first four matches of a Premier League season than the 10 they have this term. Victory over Sheffield United would see Spurs on 13 points from five games, a record they haven’t had to start a league campaign (assuming 3 pts/win) since 1965-66.
  • Sheffield United have lost 14 of their 15 previous Premier League matches against sides starting the day in the top two, with the only exception a 2-1 win away to Manchester United in January 2021.
  • Tottenham have won seven of their last eight Premier League matches against newly promoted sides, although the exception was their last such match at home, going down 2-3 to Bournemouth in April. Not since September 1994 (run of 3) have Spurs lost successive home league games to promoted sides.
  • Sheffield United have won just one of their last nine away league games against Tottenham (D2 L6), picking up a 1-0 victory at White Hart Lane in November 1991.
  • Tottenham did the league double over Sheffield United the last time they faced in 2020-21, having won just two of their previous 11 against the Blades (D4 L5).
