St Leger Festival Day 1: Tips and predictions

Ed Quigley Quigley ‘Longshot Ted’  is in unstoppable form at the moment, as he followed up Saturday’s 10/1 stunner with two winning selections from two tips on Tuesday. Ed gets stuck into the action with his best bets for the opening day of the 2023 St Leger Festival at Doncaster.

Ted’s bets for St Leger Festival day 1

  • Doncaster 3.00 – Hard To Resist e/w – bet with Tote
  • Doncaster 3.35 – Golden Lyra e/w – bet with Spreadex
  • Doncaster 4.10 – Westerton e/w – bet with bet365

Doncaster 3.00 – Hard To Resist e/w

The recent rain that has arrived on Town Moor won’t be an issue for the William Haggas trained HARD TO RESIST, who will have no issues with underfoot conditions, and connections will be fancying another crack at Darnation after finishing third to the Karl Burke runner in a messy encounter at Goodwood last time out.

There was just over two lengths between them at the line, but the Haggas runner didn’t get the best of trips on that occasion, and this more conventional, galloping track should be much more suitable. The step up in distance for this assignment looks a perfect move, and I think tackling this 1m trip for the first time with a bit of cut underfoot will be spot-on for the daughter of Dubawi.

I wouldn’t be surprised if she got much closer to Darnation this time around, and I think she is a solid each-way player with the excellent Tom Marquand in the saddle.

Doncaster 3.35 – Golden Lyra e/w

The key factor here is the trip, and the step up to an extended 1m6f for the first time can unlock the required improvement needed for GOLDEN LYRA. Connections of this relatively unexposed 4-year-old will be delighted with all the recent rainfall in the area, as the William Haggas representative is very much at home on Soft ground.

She was last seen finishing fourth in a Group 2 over 1m4f at Deauville last month, staying on well inside the closing stages to be beaten just over a length at the line. She looks all stamina, and from the evidence we have seen so far, she should thrive now being presented with a scenario which looks tailor-made for her.

This is a beautifully bred Lope De Vega filly out of a Sea The Stars mare, Tom Marquand is in the plate, and I expect the combination to be staying on strongly in the hard yards, when others have cried enough.

🎇 Bet on Golden Lyra at Spreadex 🎇

Doncaster 4.10 – Westerton e/w

In essence, I just don’t think WESTERTON stayed 1m4f in very testing ground at Goodwood last time, and the Alan King trained runner should be much happier coming back to 10f with cut in the ground. This unexposed 3-year-old could easily have more to offer off a mark of 93 now over a more suitable trip and with conditions to suit.

His legs went like jelly inside the hard yards at the Sussex venue on his latest venture and connections unsurprisingly have knocked the 12f experiment on the head at least for now. Ryan Moore is in the saddle once again, and the combination look to have strong each-way claims in this encounter.

Don’t forget Ed will be back tomorrow with his best bets for Day 2 of the St Leger Festival.
